Now a days, there is a common question which is being asked daily is “How many yards in a ton?” That’s when you’re dealing with materials like gravel, sand, cement, and rock. Knowing the number of yards in a ton helps you in your next landscaping or home improvement project.

So, keep on reading because in our today’s blog I’ve shared with you the in-depth knowledge from the very beginning.

## What is a yard?

A unit of length equivalent to three feet and more accurately to 0.9144m is called yard. The symbolic representation of Yard Unit is “Yd”. This unit is used in US System as well as British Imperial System of Units. In USA and UK, yard is commonly used to measure distances. It is also in use as a unit of volume and area as cubic yard and square yard respectively.

## What do you mean by ton?

In SI Unit weight is measured as tons, being unit of mass and equals to 1016 kg. The history pertaining to Ton is very long and is in use in many different aspects. Indian market also use this term but spell it as “tonne” which is equivalent to 1000 kg. Long ton is used in UK and Common Wealth Countries equivalent to 1016/2240 Ibs and Short ton is used in USA and Canada equals to 907.18 Kg/2000 Ibs. Tonne is used throughout the world and equivalent to 2204.62 Ibs/1000 kg.

## How many yards in a ton?

Mass/weight is measured in terms of ton and length is measured as yard. Conversion factor altogether depends upon the density of material. The density of material is a deciding factor in conversion calculations. Free online cubic yard calculator is a helpful tool while working on a construction project and figure out the material required.

Example of dirt as a material,

The density of dirt = 76 Ibs/ft3

1 yard = 3 feet

1 yard3 = 27 ft3

1 ton = 2000 ibs

Density = Weight/Volume

Weight = 76 x 27 Ibs = 2052 Ibs

Weight = 2052/2000 = 1.026 ton

## How many yards in a ton of gravel?

Gravel commonly termed as coarse aggregate is the main constituent of concrete. Gravel has vide utilization in construction industry like in asphaltic roads, concrete blocks etc.

Gravels are obtained from crushing plants by crushing the big rocks obtained from quarry and available in different shapes and sizes. Principally, yard3 is converted to ton in construction work or other related works.

## How many cubic yards in a ton of gravel?

### Loose Dry Gravel

The density of loose dry gravel in FPS is 85 Ibs/ft3 and SI unit has 1362 kg/m3. 1.15 tons is equivalent to one yard. 0.87 yard3 of loose dry gravel is equal to one ton of gravel.

### ¼ to 2-inch size dry Gravel

In FPS, the density of dry gravel in the size of 14”-2” is 105 Ib/ft3 and in SI, it comes to be 1681.94 Kg/m3. Accordingly one yard of gravel is equivalent to 1.42 tons.

¼ to 2-inch size dry gravel = 0.74 cubic yards of ¼ to 2-inch size dry gravel.

### ¼ to 2-inch size wet Gravel

In FPS, the density of wet gravel in the size of 14”-2” is 125 Ib/ft3 and in SI, it comes to be 2002.31 Kg/m3. Accordingly one yard of gravel is equivalent to 1.69 tons.

One ton ¼ to 2-inch size wet gravel = 0.59 cubic yards of ¼ to 2-inch size wet gravel.

### Sand

In FPS, the density of gravel with sand is 120 Ib/ft3 and in SI, it comes to be 1922.22 Kg/m3.

One yard of gravel = 1.62 tons contains 0.62 yard3 of sand

## How many yards of sand in a ton?

Sand is a granular substance made up of finely split rock and mineral particles. Rocks erode or weather with time, primarily due to water and wind, and their sediments are carried downstream. A granular material composed of mineral particles and finely split rocks is known as “Sand”. It is used as a filler material in the manufacturing of mortars, plasters, concrete etc. it is further classified as dry, loose and wet.

### Dry Sand

In FPS, the density of gravel and dry sand is 100 Ib/ft3 and in SI, it comes to be 1601.85 Kg/m3.

One yard of sand = 1.35 tons.

One ton of sand = 0.62 yard3 of sand

One ton of dry sand = 0.74 yard3 of sand

### Loose Sand

In FPS, the density of gravel with loose sand is 90 Ib/ft3 and in SI, it comes to be 1441.66 Kg/m3.

One yard of sand = 1.22 ton of sand

One ton of loose sand = 0.82 yard3 of loose sand

### Wet Sand

In FPS, the density of gravel with l sand is 90 Ib/ft3 and in SI, it comes to be 1441.66 Kg/m3.

One yard of gravel = 1.62 ton of sand

One ton of wet sand = 0.62 yard3 of wet sand

## How many yards in a ton of rock?

1 yd3 = 3000 ibs

1 ton = 2000 ibs

Number of tons = 3000/2000 = 1.5 tons.

1 ton of rock = 0.67 yard3 of rock

## How many yards in a ton of cement powder?

Cement has marvelous binding properties when contact with water due to formation of C-S-H. Concrete is a major construction material on the planet till date due to its enormous consumption in construction industry.

50 Kg bag of cement = 0.347 cubic meter

The density of cement is around 90lb/ft3 which equates to 1440 kg/m3 in SI measurements. As a result, 1 cubic yard of cement equals 1.27 tons. So, one ton of cement contains 0.79 cubic yards of cement.

In FPS, the density of cement 90 Ib/ft3 and in SI, it comes to be 1440 Kg/m3.

One yard3 of cement = 1.27 ton

One ton of cement = 0.79 yard3 of cement
