The news is from BRIGHTON TOWNSHIP, MI (Brighton Charter Township is a charter township of Livingston County in the U.S. state of Michigan) – A massive project to rebuild the U.S. 23 and I-96 interchange in Livingston County is about 85 percent complete.

The Michigan Department of Transportation is finishing a project to build three new through lanes on I-96, build three new bridges and reconstruct six bridges over U.S. 23 and old U.S. 23.

The $75 million project, which started in 2015, should be done in early October, said Kari Arend, MDOT spokeswoman.

\”The bulk of the project is complete. Work is still centered along the I-96 collector-distributor lanes and bridges located there,\” she said. \”Overall, there is about 10 to 15 percent of the project left to complete.\”

Ramp and shoulder upgrades remain on MDOT\’s to-do list.

The new large bridge beams are in place, and work crews are slowly taking away the cranes drivers have seen there for more than a year, she said.

The project is designed to make traffic move more smoothly and reduce congestion in the interchange, according to MDOT.

Drivers will merge onto the same lanes, but motorists passing through the interchange will remain on express lanes.

MDOT will post the final closures as necessary; the closures are at night and on weekends to reduce the impact on traffic. Officials are still determining the remaining closures and the end of construction as the project wraps up, Arend said.

The ramp from northbound U.S. 23 to eastbound I-96 will close for shoulder upgrades from 6 a.m. to noon Saturday. Drivers can take westbound I-96 to Spencer Road to eastbound I-96.

Old U.S. 23 at I-96 will close from 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday. Traffic will detour from Grand River Avenue to Pleasant Valley Road to Spencer Road.
