Formula notes

  • Net reinforcing steel weight is converted internally to kilograms before cost calculations.
  • Procurement weight = net weight x (1 + waste percentage / 100).
  • Base rebar cost = net weight expressed in the selected rate basis x user-supplied unit rate.
  • Total rebar cost = procurement weight expressed in the selected rate basis x user-supplied unit rate.
  • Waste allowance cost = total rebar cost - base rebar cost.
  • 1 metric tonne = 1000 kg.
  • 1 kg = approximately 2.204622622 lb.
  • 1 US short ton = 2000 lb = approximately 907.18474 kg.
  • The monetary results use the same currency as the unit rate entered by the user.
  • Worked example: net rebar weight = 5000 kg, rate = 1.20 currency units/kg, waste allowance = 5 percent. Procurement weight = 5250 kg. Base cost = 6000.00. Waste allowance cost = 300.00. Total estimated rebar cost = 6300.00 currency units.
  • QA test 1: weight 5000 kg, rate 1.20 per kg, waste 5 percent => net weight 5000 kg; procurement weight 5250 kg; base cost 6000.00; total cost 6300.00.
  • QA test 2: weight 12 metric tonnes, rate 950 per metric tonne, waste 3 percent => procurement weight 12.360 tonnes; base cost 11400.00; total cost 11742.00; waste cost 342.00.

Assumptions

  • The entered reinforcing steel weight is the net calculated or measured quantity before waste unless the user intentionally enters an already adjusted quantity.
  • The entered unit rate is supplied by the user and corresponds exactly to the selected rate basis.
  • The calculator does not retrieve live steel prices, supplier quotations, regional rates, exchange rates, or market indices.
  • The same currency is used throughout the calculation and no currency conversion is performed.
  • The waste or contingency percentage is applied directly to the net reinforcing steel weight.
  • The calculator estimates reinforcing steel material cost only unless the entered unit rate already incorporates other cost components.
  • Unless included in the user-supplied rate, the estimate excludes bar cutting, bending, fabrication, couplers, welding, chairs, spacers, binding wire, transportation, unloading, storage, labour, equipment, installation, taxes, escalation, overhead, profit, testing, and other project costs.
  • Lap splice quantities, development lengths, hooks, bends, bar anchorage, couplers, construction tolerances, and detailing requirements must already be reflected in the entered net weight unless intentionally covered by the selected allowance.
  • Actual procurement quantities may differ from theoretical quantities because of available commercial bar lengths, cutting optimization, offcuts, stock management, minimum purchase quantities, fabrication practice, and supplier packaging.
  • The appropriate waste allowance should be selected using company procedures, bar bending schedules, cutting plans, historical project records, project conditions, and professional judgement.
  • The estimating / project basis selection is informational and does not alter the arithmetic result.
