Formula notes

  • Net volume for a rectangular or prismatic concrete member = length x width x depth x quantity.
  • All entered dimensions are internally converted to metres before the volume calculation.
  • Total order volume = net volume x (1 + waste percentage / 100).
  • Waste volume = total order volume - net geometric volume.
  • 1 m3 = approximately 1.307950619 yd3.
  • 1 m3 = approximately 35.31466672 ft3.
  • 1 m3 = 1000 litres.
  • Worked example: a slab 5 m long, 4 m wide, and 150 mm thick has a net volume of 3.000 m3. With 5 percent waste, the estimated order volume is 3.150 m3, approximately 4.120 yd3.
  • QA test 1: length 5 m, width 4 m, depth 150 mm, quantity 1, waste 5 percent => net volume 3.000 m3; waste 0.150 m3; total 3.150 m3; approximately 4.120 yd3.
  • QA test 2: length 20 ft, width 10 ft, depth 6 in, quantity 1, waste 10 percent => net volume approximately 2.832 m3; waste approximately 0.283 m3; total approximately 3.115 m3; approximately 4.074 yd3.
  • QA test 3: beam length 6000 mm, width 300 mm, depth 500 mm, quantity 8, waste 3 percent => net volume 7.200 m3; waste 0.216 m3; total 7.416 m3; approximately 9.700 yd3.
  • QA test 4: rectangular columns 3 m x 0.4 m x 0.4 m, quantity 10, waste 2 percent => net volume 4.800 m3; waste 0.096 m3; total 4.896 m3.
  • QA test 5: footings 2 m x 2 m x 0.5 m, quantity 4, waste 0 percent => net volume 8.000 m3; total volume 8.000 m3; approximately 10.464 yd3.
  • QA test 6: length 12 ft, width 8 ft, depth 4 in, quantity 3, waste 5 percent => net volume approximately 2.718 m3; waste approximately 0.136 m3; total approximately 2.854 m3; approximately 3.733 yd3.

Assumptions

  • The member is treated as a rectangular prism with uniform dimensions.
  • Dimensions entered by the user represent the actual concrete dimensions to be placed.
  • Quantity represents identical members having the same dimensions.
  • Openings, blockouts, embedded voids, rebates, haunches, chamfers, irregular profiles, and other deductions are not automatically included.
  • The waste percentage is applied to the total net geometric volume after multiplying by the member quantity.
  • The calculator does not determine an appropriate waste percentage for a project. The user should select an allowance based on construction method, placement conditions, project specifications, batching and ordering practices, tolerances, and experience.
  • For irregular members, divide the member into simpler geometric shapes and calculate the component volumes separately.
  • For circular columns, piles, pipes, cylinders, conical members, trapezoidal sections, and other non-rectangular geometry, use a calculator specifically designed for that geometry.
  • The reference or project basis selection does not modify the geometric volume result.
  • Concrete ordering practices, minimum order quantities, truck capacities, batching tolerances, yield, over-excavation, placement losses, and supplier requirements should be checked separately.
