In todays fast paced world hiring managers make decisions about whether a candidate looks suitable from a quick scan of the CV so you have to make sure that yours conveys all the relevant information concisely.

The common mistakes of CV writing


The main mistakes people fall into are in the following categories

  • Not enough information
  • Too much information
  • Formatting that confuses
  • Too long


Luckily these are easy CV writing mistakes to rectify and once you have them mastered you’ll find that you get invited to interview more often and that you will be able to achieve a higher salary. We’ll show you how below but first let’s just state what a CV is there to do.

A CV’s sole purpose is to highlight your skills and convince a hiring manager that you can do the job so that he/she brings you in to interview!

Bearing that in mind lets address our common mistakes


Not enough information – Simple,add more information, but make sure the information is pertinent to your career. Information that should be added isabout the companies you worked for and the role you did there followed by the projects you individually worked on and your specific contribution on those projects.

Too much information – Also know as waffle! Consider the information highlighted above and cut it down to the minimum. We don’t need to know that you worked with Andy and that you formed a brilliant partnership, we need to know about you, where you worked and what you did.

Formatting – Keep it simple here too, follow the structure I’m about to outline, stick to one font at one size and use bold to highlight bits that need highlighting. Using any colour apart from black is a definite no-no!



How to structure your CV to get the job 

So we’ve covered what goes in it now lets look at how to present it to make it easy to read. The basics are again keep it simple and let it flow. I’ve laid this out as it should be on the CV with the correct formatting (see the bold and undelines) so you can copy and paste into Word.

Start at the top with your contact details, Name, email, phone number. No more and no less. If you’re in a country where age discrimination isn’t prohibited then they may ask age. In the EU it is illegal to do that so don’t add it.

Personal statement:

A paragraph of three or four sentences about who you are and where you want to get to in your professional life. Do not talk about personal stuff here! Employers don’t care if you have kids, a beautiful wife that you met 30 years ago. They care that you can do the job only write professional information here. Refer to the statement of what your CV is here to do above if in doubt.

We have a couple of paragraphs here to describe to the hiring manager what you have done and the mistakes we talked about above come into play. You need to describe three things in this part and they are.

(Start with the most recent first and work backwards. Include all jobs you have done (if you have a long career then the further back you go the less relevant they are so you can cut down on the information to keep the CV concise).)


  • The company you worked for: What they do, how big they are (money and locations).
  • What your role was in the company: Responsibilities, seniority
  • Projects you worked on and responsibility there.

Projects added should be in order of importance and they should highlight all your skills. Don’t list hundreds though, just enough to demonstrate your skills.

If you read the above you now have a pretty good idea of what I have been doing which is the ultimate goal of a well written CV.

Then you need to add your Education, only tertiary qualifications as no one wants to know about how well you did in kindergarten. Laid out like below:

If you’ve published articles or written research papers then add them.

Computer Programs

Add specialist computer programs you have used. Just bullet point them

Finally add your personal interests: This is the only place you should add anything about your personal life so add a short paragraph here.

The final tip is that if possible keep your CV to two pages. If you’ve had a long career or have been a contractor then that maybe difficult so the rule can be broken for things like that. But beware about straying because people don’t have the attention span to read long documents. They will make a decision about whether to interview you by time they have finished the first two pages so make sure these pages are loaded with all the correct info.

If it does get too long or if you really want to highlight projects then consider taking out the detail of the projects and adding them to a separate portfolio. Here you can add screen shots of designs, photos of the project, calculation examples etc.  Bearing in mind a picture paints a thousand words portfolios are worth millions!

Recently the asphalt work is underway by a contractor named "AKB" - Alam Khan Brothers Engineering and Construction (PVT) Ltd. whereas the consultant is NESPAK for this project.  It is to be noted that AKB company was founded by Mr Khan in 2001 and is currently being run by its CEO Mr Alam Khan.

In Insulating Concrete Forms ICFs, the concrete is placed within two layers of insulating material, resulting in cast-in-place concrete walls. These walls might be a bit thicker from the traditional walls but can look similar by applying similar finishing coats of paint etc on the interior as well as exterior face of the walls.

The ICFs can be used as walls for residential , commercial as well as industrial buildings. The superior insulation, air tightness, and mass of the walls can reduce the cost of operating HVAC in the building by up to 40%. Concrete buildings survive high-force winds like hurricanes far better than wood or metal frame buildings. When properly reinforced, they should also withstand earthquakes well.

Of all construction materials, concrete is one of the most resistant to heat and fire. Experience shows that concrete structures are more likely to remain standing through fire than are structures of other materials.


Insulating concrete forms systems can vary in their design. "Flat" systems yield a continuous thickness of concrete, like a conventionally poured wall. The wall produced by "grid" systems has a waffle pattern where the concrete is thicker at some points than others. "Post and beam" systems have just that – discrete horizontal and vertical columns of concrete that are completely encapsulated in foam insulation. Whatever their differences, all major ICF systems are engineer-designed, code-accepted, and field-proven.

The natural surface of ground is not always level and mostly to such an extent that there may be a considerable slope either across or along or both across and along the site of most buildings.

Where the ground floor is to be at or just above ground level at the highest point, it is necessary to import some dry fill material such as broken brick or concrete hardcore to raise the level of the over site concrete and floor. A footing in which the desired width is secured by a series of steps in about the proportion of one unit of horizontal dimension to two units of vertical dimension

A foundation constructed in a series of steps that approximate the slope of the bearing stratum. The purpose is to avoid horizontal force vectors that might cause sliding.

On sloping sites an initial decision to be made is whether the ground floor is to be above ground at the highest point or partly sunk below ground.

The foundation is stepped up the slope to minimize excavation and walling below ground. The foundation is stepped so that each step is no higher than the thickness of the concrete foundation and the foundation at the higher level overlaps the lower foundation by at least 300 mm.

The load bearing walls are raised and the foundation trenches around the walls back-filled with selected soil from the excavation. The concrete over site and solid ground floor may be cast on granular fill no more than 600 mm deep or cast or placed as a suspended reinforced concrete slab. The drains shown at the back of the trench fill are laid to collect and drain water to the sides of the building.

The Bridge, a structure constructed to span over an obstacle like a river, canal or a roadway; is made up of several components which may not be noticed at single glance. However these components play a vital role in keeping the bridge erected and serviceable.

The footing of the bridge is designed to transmit the load of the vehicles or objects to the underneath bearable soil without causing any excessive settlement as well as any shear failure of the underneath soil. Usually the foundation used now days is Pile foundation as it is best suited for heavy loading and for the soils which are not that much good in terms of bearing capacity and shear modulus.

Pile

As per the definition, pile is a long slender member that carries the load of the superstructure either through skin friction around the shaft or through end bearing to the underneath bearing stratum. A group of Piles may be around 8 to 10 at suitable spacing around 3 m upto required depth of around 25 to 35 meters can be used. In our areas usually the pile is reinforced concrete cast in-situ pile, however any type can be used it depends on the requirements based on soil condition and loading condition.

Pile Cap


As it is mentioned above that certain number of piles are used thus in order to uniformly distribute the super load to the underneath piles, a reinforced concrete mat is provided called pile cap on their top which connects the piles with pier or transom (will be explained later). 
Sometimes the Piles are extended directly upto the tansom without provision of pier shaft, in this case the piles needed to be of larger diameter and thus they take more space. Therefore, in congested areas and in urban areas pile cap is used which distributes the load of a transom or pier to certain no. of piles.

The pier projecting directly above the pile cap is like a shaft or column with small cross-sectional area which is not able to cater and take the width of the carriageway and thus they need extended dimensions in transverse direction. Thus transom is provided at the top of the pier which can be regarded as a transverse beam having concrete pad on top of which the girders are placed. 

Girders Bearing Parts


Either on the abutment or on the transom of the pier, the girders are to be placed. These girders are not directly placed on the top of the transom or abutment wall. On the top of them a concrete pad may be of 100 mm thick is casted to create a stable platform for the elastomeric bearing pads to be placed. 
Elastomeric Bearing pads are modern flexible bearing heavy weight rubber part that directly takes the compression load of the bridge girder. They also take care of the jerking and shocks of the girder due to movement of the girders.

Girders


Girders take the load of the top deck slab and transfer them to the piers or tansom or abutment. Girders usually are pre-cast that are launched by gantry cranes or any suitable safe methods; however they can be cast in place as well whatever suits. Girders can be of any shape like Inverted ‘T’ or ‘I’ Section or U Section.  Depending on the width of the carriageway suitable no. of girders can be used at suitable spacing. 

These girders are usually post-tensioned in order to reduce the cross-section and better to utilize the full strength of the reinforced concrete. 

Diaphragm


As stated above suitable no. of girders can be used; thus these girders needed to be fixed / tied together. For this purpose diaphragm is designed; the girders have comparatively large width in zone of diaphragm; provision is present near the bottom of the girder in terms of sheaths to cross the rebar for a diaphragm of one girder to the other. In this way the diaphragm hold the girders. 
Girders can have diaphragms at the center called intermediate diaphragms and also at the edges called end diaphragms.

Abutment 


The abutment of the bridge is the structure away from the obstacle that is in transition from the height of the girder to the ground surface. The abutment of the structure consists of three components abutment wall, wing wall and approach slab. 

The abutment wall and wing wall retains the fill material like sand on top of which is approach RCC slab. The abutment wall have a corbel beam on which the girders rest. The wing wall as the name suggests is in shape of Wing of an aero-plane and acts like a retaining wall to retain the earth fill material of the abutment. 

In order to provide smooth transition and to take care of the stresses of the contact of the bridge with that of the ground Approach Slab is casted on the top of the earth fill material at the abutment. 

Shear Key


Although this component is not that common but it is provided now a days in order to make the bridge structure safe from earthquake stresses and seismic loads. Shear keys are provided in bridge abutments so as to provide lateral restraints to the bridge givers at moderate earthquake forces. 
The shear keys are designed as sacrificial which means that they are assumed not to further provide support to the structure once their capacity have been exceeded.  

Deck Slab


On the top of the girders a slab is casted that might be prestressed or not. The dowels projecting from the precast girders goes into the top deck slab to have proper development so as to make a monolithic structure. The deck slab is usually cast-in-situ. The deck slab directly takes the load of the vehicles. On top of the deck slab a wearing course is provided in order to protect the bridge concrete from wear and tear and to ensure good riding quality. 

N.J. Barrier


New jercy Barrier is provided on the two extreme edges of the deck slab in order to provide safety to the moving vehicles and the pedestrians crossing the bridge so they may not fall down into the spaning river or roadway.
