Dynamic Analysis, Numerical Computations, Codified Methods, Case studies and Examples
This book provides a general introduction to the topic of three-dimensional analysis and design of buildings for resistance to the effects of earthquakes.

Download Earthquake Resistant Buildings Dynamic Analysis, Case studies, examples by M.Y.H. Bamgash

It is intended for a general readership, especially persons with an interest in the design and construction of buildings under severe loadings. A major part of design for earthquake resistance involves the building structure, which has a primary rfople in preventing serious building structures and specially, their resistance to vertical and lateral forces or in combinations.

About the Book

However, due to recent discovery of the vertical component of acceleration of greater magnitude in the kobes’ earthquake the original concept of “lateral force only” has changed. This book does advocate the contribution of this disastrous component in the global analytical investigation.

When the earthquake strikes, it shakes the whole building and its contents. Full analysis for design layout and type of earthquakes, therefore, must include considerations for the complete building construction.

The building contents and the building contents and the building occupants.
The work of designing for earthquake effects is formed by a steady stream of studies, research, new technologies and the cumulative knowledge gained from forensic studies of earthquake damaged buildings.

Design and construction practices, regulating codes and professional standards continuously upgraded due to the flow of this cumulative knowledge. Hence, any book on this subject must regularly be updates. Since the effects are not the same, the earthquake forces are always problematic.

Bricks being the cheapest and long lasting are the most widely used construction material on the planet. Bricks made up of clay are heat resistant that not only protect the inner environmental from harsh weathers but also provide sufficient strength and stability to the structure and are light weight as well. Supervision in construction is very vital and necessary, Bricks being the building block of any project needs special attention towards quality control and assurance. Following are some of the points that must be kept in mind while supervision of the brick work construction.

1. Before using the bricks in construction it should be checked for its physical properties (such as strength, dimension, water absorption etc).

2. Bricks must conform to the designer’s specification as stated in the project documents.

3. As we know that bricks absorbs water, and we also need water in mortar to ensure proper hydration reaction for curing of the mortar thus, prior to use bricks in construction, it should be soaked in water for sufficient time so that the water penetrates the whole depth of brick.

4. After completion of the soaking period, bricks should be removed from water and allowed to become surface dry, before use in construction.

5. Always laid the bricks having its frog facing upward.

6. The mortar should completely cover the bed and sides of the bricks.

7. During laying bricks on mortar bed, it should be slightly pressed into the mortar bed to ensure good bonding and uniform joint thickness.

8. During laying bricks should also be pressed sideways, to have uniform thickness of vertical joints.

9. All the joints in brick masonry should be so filled with mortar that no cavity is left in between.
10. Brick work construction should be started from its end or corners and it should be carried out perfectly in line.

11. The brick work should be perfectly in level.

12. Check the vertical faces of a brick work by means of a plumb bob and check the inclined surfaces by means of wooden templates.

13. Brick bonds as suggested by the designer should be adopted.

14. As far as possible try to use less no of brick bats.

15. Mortar of required consistency should be used.

16. The amount of mortar per use should be so prepared that it can be used within 30 minutes. Any mortar older than 30 minutes should not be used.

17. In case cross wall is to be inserted later, steps or toothing or recesses should be provided during construction.

18. At plinth, window sill, floor level, roof level and at the top of the parapet wall, the brick course should be laid with bricks on edge.

19. Iron fixtures such as hold fasts for doors & windows etc, should be embedded in cement mortar or cement concrete.

20. In case the wall face is to be plastered, all joints should be raked to a minimum depth of 10 to 15 mm. this raking is done when the mortar is in green condition.

21. If no plaster has to be done on wall surface, then joints in the wall surface should not be raked at all.

22. At every 30 m to 45 m length of wall, provide expansion joints of about 18 mm to 25 mm

23. After construction of brick masonry, it should be cured properly for a period of 1 to 2 week.

A truss is a structure consisting of members / elements that takes only tension or compression and no bending is induced what so ever. The members are connected with a guzzet joint that is either riveted, bolted or welded in such a way that has only axial forces are induced in the structure. The reason behind axial forces is the reason that the external loads are applied in such a way that their effects are in the form of forces applying only on joints.

Definition of Truss

A truss is a very Useful structures as far as weight of building is considered.
One more definition is that truss is a structural member that is assembled in such a way that forces are applied only on the ends.

Types of Trusses

A truss can be of two types as far as workspace is considered;-
1. Planar truss
2. Space truss
Planar truss is that in which members lie in a two dimensional plane while space truss lies in three dimension.

A truss is composed of three basic parts, one is top chord, the beam at the top which is usually in compression, bottom chord, beam at the bottom which is usually in tension, webs are interior beams.

There are variety of trusses available depending on the requirement including span length and loading condition.

Basically two types of trusses exists :-
a) Bridge Truss
b) Roof Truss

Bridge Truss

1. Pratt Bridge Truss

It includes vertical members and diagonals that slope down towards the center.  The diagonal members are subjected to tension while vertical members are subjected to compression.

2. Howe bridge Truss

It includes vertical members and diagonals that slope up towards the center.

3. Baltimore Bridge Truss

A Baltimore truss has additional bracing in the lower section of the truss to prevent buckling in the compression members and to control deflection.

4. K Bridge Truss

A truss in the form of a K due to the orientation of the vertical member and two oblique members in each panel is known as a K bridge Truss

5. Warren Bridge Truss

It consists of longitudinal members joined only by angled cross-members, forming alternately inverted equilateral triangle-shaped spaces along its length.

6. Bailey Bridge Truss

It is designed for military use, the prefabricated and standardized truss elements may be easily combined in various configurations to adapt to the needs.

Roof Truss

1. Pratt Roof Truss

It uses vertical member for compression and horizontal members to respond to tension and is most efficient under static and vertical loading.

2. Fink Roof Truss

They are used for longer spans having high pitch roof, since the web members in such truss are sub-divided to obtain shorter members.

3. Howe Roof Truss

It is a roof truss with vertical web members to take tension forces and with angled braces to take compression.

4. Warren Roof Truss

In warren roof truss diagonal members are alternatively in tension and compression are used in a building ranging from 20-100 m in length.

5. King Post Roof Truss

A king post extends vertically from a crossbeam to the apex of a triangular truss. It connects the apex of the truss with its base, holding up the beam (in tension) at the base of the truss.
